Early indications suggest that this year's flu season may be more severe than last year with the virus spreading fast so far.

Four states have widespread flu activity now, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were none last year at this time. The four states are Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Massachusetts.

Flu season may peak during the holiday season, experts say.

Everyone 6 months and older should receive a yearly flu vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which recommends getting the vaccine in late October or early November. But it's still not too late, though it takes about two weeks for the flu shot to take effect.

This year's vaccine may be only 10 percent effective against this season's strain, however, experts say.

A flu report is issued each week by the CDC.
