The Cross River resident won "Lead Actor in a Comedy Series" beating out Anthony Anderson in "Black-ish," Aziz Ansari in "Master of None," Will Forte in "The Last Man on Earth", William H. Macy in "Shameless," and "Silicon Valley's" Thomas Middleditch.

Tambor plays Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman who comes out to her family late in life. In his acceptance speech, Tambor said he would not be unhappy if he was "the last cisgendered man to play a transgender woman."

"Give transgender talent a chance," he told the crowd.

The Emmy awards, which took place Sunday, Sept. 18 at The Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
