National Bike Month was started in 1956 and is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. It's celebrated nationwide as a way for communities to communicate the benefits of biking.
As a national sponsor, the League of American Bicyclists provides resources to help people plans events in their neighborhoods.
The momentum has grown each year and the number and diversity of Bike Month continues to grow, according to the National Bike Month website.
The National Household Travel Survey showed that the number of trips made by bicycle in the U.S. more than doubled from 1.7 billion in 2001 to 4 billion in 2009.
