Bicycle Sundays Return To The Bronx River Parkway

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Riders descended Sunday on the the Bronx River Parkway to take advantage of 13 miles of open road thanks to the return of Westchester County's Bicycle Sundays.

The county closes the parkway to cars and opens it to cyclists, skaters, nonmotorized scooters, walkers, joggers and strollers. Participants can park at County Center for $5 and ride south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers and back, a 13.1-mile round-trip. The program runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through September.

Debbie Jenkins of the Yonkers Bike Club said the event gives people a place to avoid the crowded streets, get some exercise and gives families a chance to spend some time together.

“Bicycling crosses all generations,” Jenkins said. “Kids can ride with their parents and grandparents and promote healthy living.”

Bronxville residents Joanne Morneau and Mary Carradino said they like the opportunity  to ride at their own pace without having to dodge traffic. Morneau added that there aren’t many other places to ride this far in the county.

“I wish they would do more and go into October,” Carradino said. “They should have it in the summertime, too.”

Bronxville resident Tom Siriano said he comes out for the event to get in shape, adding that he would like to see bicycles made available to people who might not have anything to ride.

“This is a great outdoor activity for everyone, and it’s great to see the kids out enjoying themselves with their families,” Siriano said.
