WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Apple’s iPhone 6 will hit shelves Sept. 19 and comes in two sizes, armed with a gambit of new features and upgrades, which already has some Westchester residents sold on the new product.
White Plains resident Simon Dee was one of about a dozen to watch the launch in California via a live stream Tuesday at the Apple Store in The Westchester Mall in White Plains. The live feed may have been inconsistent, cutting in and out early on, but feedback from shoppers on the new iPhone was consistently positive.
“I like the fact that they made two, one bigger one smaller,” Dee said. “Because there’s no way I would have upgraded to the bigger one. That’s the reason why I stay away from the Galaxy because I need something that’s compact.”
The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display screen with one million megapixels. A larger version called iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen with two million megapixels. Both are thinner than previous models, have rounded edges and use ion-strengthened glass on top, which enticed Purchase resident Tyler Henson.
“I have so many friends that have broken screens and this glass, you can almost completely bend it in half and it doesn’t break,” he said, adding that he preferred the larger screen for reading.
Both phones, which are available in silver, gold and black, go on sale Sept. 19 with pre-orders beginning Friday, Sept. 12. With a two-year contract the iPhone 6 costs $200 for 16 GB, $300 for 64 GB and $400 for 128 GB. The iPhone 6 Plus costs $300 for 16 GB, $400 for 64 GB and $500 for 128 GB.
“I’m going to wait probably until January or February so they get the kinks out,” Dee said. “But, it looks sleek. No matter what Apple does it just gets better and better.”
The new iPhones are 84 times faster than the original, and WiFi is three times faster.
A big sticking point for Dee, Henson and Larchmont resident Amy Hogan is battery life.
“I hope the battery is better, because the battery on the 5S is our biggest problem,” she said.
Hogan went to the Apple Store Tuesday just before the launch streamed to ask about the iPhone 6 because she said her daughter’s phone is breaking. After hearing about some of the new features, she said she plans to buy it.
