MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Diagnosed with a rare pulmonary disorder, Nancy's only treatment option was to undergo a double lung transplant.
After surgery, once the transplant took, Nancy was given clearance to return to physical activity. It was then that she began pulmonary rehab through Northern Westchester Hospital's Rehabilitation Services at Chappaqua Crossing.
Nancy slowly built up her lung capacity and stamina, working her way up to nearly two hours of exercise each visit. The results, she says, are incredible. "My husband and I went to Europe and walked miles and miles every day," said Nancy. "There was no way I could do that without the rehab at NWH at Chappaqua Crossing."
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services at Northern Westchester Hospital are available to patients of all ages who experience shortness of breath – helping smokers, former smokers, individuals with a history of pulmonary disease, cancer survivors, people with COPD, heart disease, obesity, hypertension and others. Personalized programs by certified respiratory therapists are designed to lessen shortness of breath, while helping improve activity endurance and quality of life.
"We're the fun part of the Hospital," Nancy said of her rehab sessions. "We're always playing music and anyone who comes here knows all the action is with pulmonary rehab." Patients have access to state of the art fitness machines and advanced health reporting, which helps breathe new life into their lungs day after day.
"I'll be coming here the rest of my life," said Nancy, of the rehab center. "I'm a lifer."
