WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. White Plains will be donating shoes and sneakers to Haiti as a part of Make A Difference Day, which is the largest national day of community service, according to a press release from the city.
We have a large Haitian population here in the city of White Plains, said Frank Williams, executive director of the White Plains Youth Bureau. As a city, were concerned still about children in Haiti who have been impacted because of the hurricane to continue to do what we can do to help those children.
Williams said donating the footwear to poverty-stricken Haiti will help many children.
What were trying to do is to remind people in that country, children are still poor and needy and need help, he said. Theyre children who still lack certain necessities and even something as simple as a pair of shoes because of the poverty there. We can make a little bit of a difference in donating shoes to children in Haiti.
He also credited Mayor Thomas Roach for the White Plains Youth Bureaus involvement in the event.
The mayor has encouraged us to be concerned not just about the kids in the city, but to be concerned about all kids, Williams said. As a city with a diversity of kids from all cultures and backgrounds, were concerned about the plight of children all over the world.
The shoes and sneakers will be going to the Help Children of God non-profit organization based in Haiti. People can drop off their gently used or new shoes and sneakers at the White Plains Youth Bureau, 11 Amherst Place, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
