Since its inception, the goal of the free program has been to encourage young people to focus on active lifestyles, even in the summer, YMCA officials said.
To that end, the White Plains YMCA, 250 Mamaroneck Ave., will have dance, soccer, basketball, wallyball, swimming and a dance party hosted by teen leaders. Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for the April 30 event.
It is part of the national YMCA's Healthy Kids Day, which is celebrated at over 1,300 YMCAs nationwide by more than 1.2 million people, officials said. The idea is to help families live healthy lives.
“A child’s development is never on vacation, and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the summer,” said Heather Bell, associate executive director.
YMCA officials also offer these tips for families for healthy living:
- Eat your fruit and vegetables.
- Encourage a love of reading.
- Exercise together.
- Volunteer as a family.
- Get plenty of rest.
