WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Saturday's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade will begin an hour later than planned -- at 1 p.m. on March 14 -- due to expected inclement weather, city officials announced on Friday.
Irish pride will kick off in White Plains beginning with a special St. Patrick's Day celebration Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church on 920 Mamaroneck Ave. at 9 a.m. and the St. Patrick's Day Parade following at 1 o'clock.
"With the new 1 p.m. start, we are hopeful to avoid most of the steadier rains predicted for the morning hours,'' Karen Pasquale, senior advisor to Mayor Tom Roach, said on Friday.
The parade will begin on Mamaroneck Avenue and proceed to City Hall on Main Street.
Dr. Mary Beth Walsh, who will be representing Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains and its 100 years of service to White Plains and beyond, is grand marshal.
Dr. Walsh will lead the parade along with her aides Joseph Collins, Sheila Cooney, Liz Hyland, Larry Meegan, Megan McDowell Rathsack and Kevin Scully.
The aides are residents of White Plains and can trace their roots back to Ireland (in one case back to the eighteenth century). They support their Irish heritage by participating in the Emerald or Hibernian societies and encourage their children’s heritage with participation as Irish step dancers.
A third-generation Irish-American, Walsh, is the executive medical director and chief executive officer of Burke. She has held this position since 1995, making her the first female CEO of a hospital in Westchester County and one of the only female CEOs of a hospital in New York State.
The installation of the grand marshal and aides were Thursday at Vintage Bar & Restaurant, 171 Main St. in White Plains.
John Martin has been chairman of the White Plains St. Patrick’s Parade Committee for 18 years.
