The event is in its 17th year and provides a wonderful assortment of unusual and affordable items, created and sold with a conscience.
“Fair trade” is a partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers. Many of the crafts are made by artists in women-managed cooperatives. Funds raised by the sale of these crafts initiate support for a living wage and better living conditions.
The items sold benefit the artisans who created them. Some artisans are local. We also have artisans from Thailand, Vietnam, South Africa, Cambodia, India, and Tanzania. Items include pottery, beadwork, baskets, fabrics, jewelry, mosaics, aromatherapy and body care products, organic beauty products, quilts, tablecloths, organic chocolate, olive oils, scarves, ornaments, recycled rice bag products, wallets, totes, T-shirts, linens, sculptures, decorative planters, gloves, shawls, scrimshaw jewelry, and earthenware.
Live music performed throughout the day will feature saxophonist Art Bennett, New York City duo Curtis and Carla, and the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus. Homemade baked goods, soup, bread and fair trade coffee/tea will be available for purchase. Suggested donation for admission is $2 to $5. Organizing groups will share the proceeds and will contribute a portion to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers: http://ciw-online.org/.
This event is organized by Memorial United Methodist Church, The LOFT: LGBT Community Services Center, Westchester Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute for Nonviolence and WESPAC Foundation.
