White Plains Is Among Area Towns Honoring Holocaust Rembrance Day

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Holocaust Remembrance Day, also known as Yom Hashoah, is Thursday, April 16 but there are already a host of events going on. A sampling follows:

  • Now through Friday, April 17, JCC of Harrison: Ever since Carla Ifrah's son studied the Holocaust for his bar mitzvah three years ago, the family has put together a comprehensive exhibit that is free and open to the public (appointment necessary). The exhibit of more than 100 items (all replicas) deals more with what might have been, rather than with the graphic horrors. Already, according to Rabbi Eytan Hammerman, hundreds of school groups have passed through. Information: 130 Union Ave., (914)-835-2850, .

  • Sunday, April 12, Temple Bet Torah, Mount Kisco: A community observance will be held at 9:45 a.m. featuring readings and student artwork. Information: 60 Smith Ave., (914)-666-7595, .

  • Sunday, April 12, Westchester Jewish Center, Mamaroneck: Renowned Jewish film expert and educator, Eric Goldman will lead an exploration of how cinema reflects memories and experiences of the Holocaust, as well as how it affects and shapes our understanding of the Shoah. Event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m..   • Monday, April 13, City Council Chambers, Mount Vernon: Three rabbi's -- Rabbi Andy Bossov from Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), Rabbi Barzilai from Sinai Free Synagogue and Rabbi Berger from Fleetwood Synagogue --  will participate in a musical performance as part of Mount Vernon's Remembrance Ceremony. The event debuts two poems written by a senior temple member set to music (tenor, piano and flute) by the singer/composer Robert Puleo of New Rochelle. The poet, Francoise Grab of Mount Vernon, is a French national who wrote poignant memoirs about losing her Jewish best friend.   • Wednesday, April 15, Congregation Sons of Israel, Briarcliff Manor: Halina Rosenkranz, Counselor for the WJCS Holocaust Survivor Program, will be the featured speaker starting at 7:30 p.m. Information: 1666 Pleasantville Rd., (914)-762-2700, .

  • Wednesday, April 15, Temple Beth Abraham, Tarrytown: Holocaust Survivor Ruth Bachner will speak at 7:30 p.m. Information: 25 Leroy Ave., (914)-631-1770, /.

  • Thursday, April 16, White Plains: This free, open-to-the-public Annual Countywide Commemoration at the Garden of Remembrance is sponsored by Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center and Westchester Jewish Council and will feature a procession of lost scrolls along with remarks from a Holocaust survivor, area rabbis and dignataries including Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino. The event is at noon.
