What's Happening Around White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A vigil for White Plains teen Tyler Madoff, who was lost off the coast of Hawaii's Big Island, a night of dancing under the stars and a free SAT practice test are a few of the events this week in White Plains.

Monday, July 23

Parks, Recreation and Conservation Board: 4 p.m. The Westchester County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Board will meet at the Westchester County Center, 198 Central Ave.

Storybook Art: 4:30-5 p.m. The White Plains Library children's room, known as the TROVE, continues its summer "Dream Big!" theme with its Monday afternoon series of activities for second through sixth graders. This week, make sand, watercolor and pencil art pictures inspired by S.B. Lee's book, "Sand Castle." White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

TROVE @ The Movies: 7-8:30 p.m. The TROVE Summer Film Festival continues with a showing of "Puss in Boots," an animated film that tells the story of the events leading up to the sword fighting cat's meeting with Shrek and his friends. This 90-minute movie is rated PG for some adventure action and mild rude humor. The movie will be shown again Friday at 3 p.m., and no tickets are needed for this free event. Tuesday, July 24

County Planning Board Meeting: 8 a.m. The Westchester County Planning Board will meet in Cassella Conference Room 420 in the Michaelian Building, 148 Martine Ave.

6-5-4 Let's Explore: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Joan Lloyd will demonstrate how to make beaded earrings to fourth through sixth graders and talk about her work donating earrings to women's shelters. She supplies the beads and asks participants to make and donate a pair of earrings for each pair they keep for themselves. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Wednesday, July 25

White Plains Farmers Market: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The market is on Court Street between Martine Avenue and Main Street and will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21.

"Constellations Tonight" STARLAB Planetarium: 4-4:40 p.m. Kids in grades 1-3 will be able to enter the STARLAB Portable Planetarium and participate in the "Constellations Tonight" program, where they will discover the night sky. They will learn about the workings of the STARLAB, discover how to locate Polaris, the "Big Dipper" and more. The sky in the Planetarium will be set for July 25, so participants will see the moon, visible planets and stars as they appear this night. Kids in grades 4-6 will have the same chance from 5 to 5:40 p.m. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Planetarium — Our Solar System: 6-7 p.m. Examine the size and scale and properties of the various planets found in our solar system and answer the question, “What really happened to Pluto?” This program is for teens and requires registration. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Dancing Under the Stars: 7-9 p.m. Dances will be held each Wednesday evening at Renaissance Plaza at Main Street and Mamaroneck Avenue. There will be a different band each week. 

Thursday, July 26

Industrial Development Agency: 8:30 a.m. The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency, which gives support to existing and relocating businesses by selling taxable and tax-exempt agency securities, will meet Thursday morning on the ninth floor of 148 Martine Ave.

Memorial Service for Tyler Madoff: 10 a.m. Family and friends will remember Tyler Madoff, the White Plains teen who was washed into the ocean July 4 during a hiking and kayaking trip in Hawaii. His body has not been found. Glen Island Park boathouse in New Rochelle.

Mouse and Windows Skills: 10:15-11:45 a.m. Learn how to use the mouse, including point and click, pull-down menus and scroll bars. Students will also learn basic Windows functions such as opening and closing programs, minimize/maximize, and how to start a computer session at the Library. Pre-registration is required and can be done in-person at the Reference Desk or by calling 914-422-1480. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

SAT Practice Test with Kaplan: 10:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. A free SAT practice test will be administered by Kaplan. Sign up by visiting its website, where you will be prompted to enter you zip code and select an SAT practice test. Then select White Plains Library for your location.
