What's Happening Around White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A salsa class, a poetry slam at the library and an information session on the Tappan Zee Bridge are a few of the events happening in White Plains this week.

Monday, Sept. 3

Labor Day: The White Plains Library, post office and government buildings will be closed.

Tuesday, Sept. 4

Environmet and Energy Committee Meeting: 3 p.m. Westchester County Board of Legislators Chairman Kenneth Jenkins (D-Yonkers) will introduce new legislation requiring all Westchester County storm water basins to receive mosquito larvicide treatments based on a formula derived from the previous winter’s weather pattern. Salsa With Addie Diaz: 6:30–7:30 p.m. Learn a cultural dance and express yourself through it. Participants will learn about the creative interaction between Latin dance and musical timing. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Common Council Meeting: 7 p.m. There will be public hearings on the proposed Sunrise Detox Center on 37 DeKalb Ave., as well as the proposed amendment to the comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance to create a new Open Space Recreation District. City Hall, 255 Main St.

Wednesday, Sept. 5

White Plains Farmers' Market: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The market is on Court Street between Martine Avenue and Main Street and will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21.

Citizenship Class Registration: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. People can register for the White Plains Library’s citizenship class, which is at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from September through December. The class will prepare participants to take the U.S. citizenship exam and will cover all parts of the process. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Poetry Slam and Open Mic: The White Plains Library’s "1st Wednesday" series continues with Open Mic, SLAM competition and guest poet. Those who want to take the mic can register at 6:30 p.m. and should bring two original poems of up to three minutes each. Local poet and slammaster Eric Zork Alan will host. Web Browser Basics: 7:30–8:45 p.m. This is a class designed for people who are comfortable using the mouse and are ready to begin exploring the Internet. Students will learn the basics of the Mozilla Firefox web browser, including toolbar buttons, using links and finding information on a web page. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Thursday, Sept. 6

Tappan Zee Bridge Town Hall: 8 a.m. Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office is visiting White Plains to share information, take questions and engage in dialogue with the members of the local community relating to the Tappan Zee Bridge reconstruction. Registration for “Act It Out”: 10 a.m. Registration begins for the "Act It Out" program, a three-session drama workshop of theater games and script reading for grades 3-6. Sessions are Sept. 13, 20 and 27. There will be a group performance at the end of the last session at 5 p.m. Register in person in The Trove or by telephone - 914-422-1476. Mouse and Windows Skills: 10:15–11:45 a.m. Learn how to use the mouse, including point and click, pull-down menus, and scroll bars. Students also will learn basic Windows functions, such as opening and closing programs, minimize/maximize, and how to start a computer session at the library.
