What To Do In White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - A job club, a claymation tutorial in honor of Black History Month and a poetry slam and open mic night are a few of the events happening in White Plains this week.

Monday, Feb. 4

Teen Advisory Group: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Give your ideas on what you want to see in the library from movies to music to books, to teen events. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave. Common Council Meeting: 7 p.m. The White Plains Common Council will hold a public hearing to establish a sustainable energy loan program. City Hall, 255 Main St.

Tuesday, Feb. 5

Job Club: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Career counselors Ginny Ruder and Rose Macom will cover writing resumes and cover letters, preparing for an interview, using the Internet and social media together with the library's resources to conduct a job search, and tips on developing a strong professional network. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Wednesday, Feb. 6

Claymation for Black History Month: 6 to 7 p.m. High school students may join a four-part claymation workshop in which they will tell the life story of three famous African-Americans. Westchester artist Susan Ordahl will discuss the general principles of animation, guide participants through the process of building characters made out of clay, and help participants develop effective story ideas. The finished claymation video will be posted on YouTube. There is a 20 person limit and registration is not required but appreciated and can be done online. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Poetry Slam and Open Mic: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The guest poet this month is Joanna Hoffman, a member of five National Poetry Slam teams. She placed fourth overall at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in 2012, and is the Grand Slam Champion for the 2012 Urbana team. Register between 6:30 and 7 p.m. to take part and bring two original poems of up to three minutes each. Thursday, Feb. 7

Dating and Healthy Relationships: 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. This program for teens will include a screening of "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" and a presentation and interactive healthy relationships/anti-teen dating violence workshop based on messages in the film. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

LEGO Club: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Design and build your own structures using the Trove's LEGO set. This program is for students in grades one through six. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.
