What To Do In White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A seminar for parents on the new elementary math curriculum, a program for kids on the art of storytelling and an open-mic night and poetry slam are a few of the events happening in White Plains this week.

Monday, Dec. 3

Common Council Meeting : 7 p.m. The White Plains Common Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed Sunrise Detox Center, which would be located at 37 DeKalb Ave.

New Math Curriculum : 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Parents will get an overview of the new elementary school math curriculum, including demonstrations and hands-on activities from the mathematics coordinator for the White Plains School District.

Tuesday, Dec. 4

The Art of Storytelling : 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Participants in grades six through eight will learn the fundamentals of designing a character, figure drawing, how to create a layout, specific angle shots and their meaning, what not to do and continuity. Registration is not required, but can be done online. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Wednesday, Dec. 5

Poetry Slam and Open Mic : 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. The “1rst Wednesday” series continues with guest poet “Mighty” Mike McGee, winner of the National Poetry Slam Individual Grand Championship and the Individual World Poetry Championship. Registration is from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants are asked to bring two original poems of up to three minutes each. The College Search : 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Learn what factors to consider when evaluating colleges, such as size, location and majors. Learn to better identify and describe what you and your child are looking for in colleges. White Plains High School, 550 North St.

“Wonderful Town” Short Story Discussion : 2 p.m.-4 p.m. White Plains librarian Barbara Wenglin explores “A Sentimental Journey” by Peter Taylor (1955) and “The Failure” by Jonathan Franzen (1999). These two short stories are from the acclaimed anthology "Wonderful Town: New York Stories from The New Yorker ~ Celebrating 75 years of the magazine’s enduring literary influence." Puppets Read Poems : 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Make a puppet, then learn how to use it and practice reading short, funny poems. This program is for children in grades three through six. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.
