What To Do In White Plains This Weekend

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A babysitting lesson for teens, a book group for fifth and sixth graders and three performances of a rock opera based on The Who’s 1969 album “Tommy” are a few of the events happening in White Plains this weekend.

Friday, Dec. 28

Introduction to Babysitting: 1 – 5 p.m. Teens will learn the responsibilities of the babysitter and the parents, how to handle emergencies and safety; playing and infant care. There is a true/false test at the end of the class, along with a certificate of completion. Registration is not required but can be done online

Book Bunch: 2 – 3:30 p.m. Read "Looking for Bapu," by Anjali Banerjee and talk about it with other kids over pizza at Uno Chicago Grill with the White Plains Library children’s room’s book group for fifth and sixth graders. Uno Chicago Grill, 14 Martine Ave.

“The Who’s Tommy”: 8 p.m. The White Plains Performing Arts Center presents “The Who’s Tommy,” a rock musical by Pete Townsend and Des McAnuff based on The Who’s 1969 double album rock opera “Tommy.” Recommended for ages 16 and older for mature subject matter. Tickets are $30 to $35. White Plains Performing Arts Center, 11 City Place.

Saturday. Dec. 29

Slam Dunk Basketball Tournament: 11 a.m. This four-day high school basketball tournament concludes Saturday with the first games starting at 11 a.m. Admission costs $5 per day. Tickets are onsale at the County Center Box Office. Westchester County Center, 198 Central Ave.

Celebrities – We Remember Them Well: noon – 5 p.m. ArtsWestchester is displaying around 150 rare, vintage photos of iconic celebrities. Some of the last photos taken of John Lennon and Yoko Ono as a couple before Lennon’s death are featured prominently. Other photos taken of artists, actors, politicians and authors—Marilyn Monroe, Louis Armstrong and President Barack Obama among them—will all be showcased. Gallery hours will be from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays until Jan. 2. ArtsWestchester’s The Art Exchange, 31 Mamaroneck Ave.
