WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Get out the frying pan. Sunday is National Grilled Cheese Day.
According to National Day Calendar, which tracks such things, the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the U.S. in the 1920′s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became easily available. It was originally made as an open-faced sandwich but changed over the years.
As for what cheese and bread to use? Opinions vary.
A recent survey by the dating and social networking site Skout reported that cheddar, with all its oozing glory, is most popular (33 percent) with mozzarella (10 percent), Swiss (8 percent), provolone (6 percent) and brie (2 percent) also in the running (no pun intended).
White bread, said the report, ranks tops (51 percent), followed by wheat (29 percent), sourdough (13 percent), rye (4 percent) and baguette (3 percent).
Aside from its popular pairing with a cup of tomato soup, grilled cheese has now been elevated to "foodie status," with recipes galore (go here for some tasty-looking ones).
