WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Dr. Joseph N. Hankin, the longest tenured community college president in the nation, will be honored along with longtime Westchester Community College supporter David Swope at the Westchester Community College Foundation Spring for Scholarships event on Wednesday, May 7.

The event, which raises funds for student scholarships, will be held at Tappan Hill. It will begin with a 6 p.m. cocktail party and a dinner commencing at 7 p.m.

Hankin was named the leader of Westchester Community College in 1971 and the transformation of the institution was almost immediate.

Following through on his suggestions proposed during his interview process (opening the campus to the community, expanding academic programs, repairing infrastructure, etc.), he immediately moved forward to begin the rejuvenation of the college. Although relatively new to the role of president (having previously served as president of Maryland’s Harford Community College for four years),  Hankin immediately began his four-decade mission toward a commitment to quality, accessibility, affordability and expansion. For two decades, Swope, an Ossining resident, has provided leadership, guidance and wisdom in a variety of volunteer roles at the college. Currently chair of the college’s Board of Trustees, he is a former Chair of the Foundation. He remains a member. As a result of his role as longtime supporter of the institution, focusing on increasing student access and student success, he will be named a recipient of the Foundation’s Donor of Distinction Award at the May 7 event.  By purchasing a ticket to the Spring for Scholarships event for $300, community members will be contributing to the scholarship program at Westchester Community College.
