On September 4, at around 3:15 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 7900 block of Central Park Circle to investigate a shooting, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

As law enforcement arrived, officers heard a gunshot and discovered 59-year-old Daphne Saunders-Johnson and her husband 62-year-old James Johnson suffering from gunshot wounds, officials reported.

The husband and wife were taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries, police said.

Saunders-Johnson later died at the hospital and Johnson was reported to be in critical, but stable condition, authorities said.

Police said their initial investigation revealed that Johnson shot his wife before shooting himself.

A firearm was recovered in the home that the couple shared, officials said.

Johnson was charged with second degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, law enforcement reported.

He was set to be transferred to the Adult Detention Center upon his release from the hospital, police said.
