What had been Zoe's Cupcake Cafe is now Angela Logan's Mortgage Apple Cakes Bakery & Cafe where moist made-from-love apple cakes form the backbone of the business.

For those not in the know, Logan, a Teaneck resident, gained worldwide fame in July 2009 when her story of baking 100 apple cakes in ten days at $40 each as a way to raise money and risk foreclosure on her beloved home went viral, bringing in hundreds of orders -- along with enough money to save her home (her story was made into a TV movie).

"It was one miracle after another," said Logan, first of the reporter who wrote her story, then the people who ordered cakes, then the Hilton Hotel who offered her the use of their kitchen, and the national online cake baker that helped her ship orders worldwide. (She even said the Health Department was nice when they told her she couldn't bake and sell out of her home.)

And now, eight weeks ago, she moved into the former Cupcake space where, among her apple offerings she also offers vegan and gluten-free baked goods.

Logan said her grandmother taught her how to bake and she likes to think the secret to her success is not only her back story -- it was her cherished family recipes that she dug out as a way to dig out of her financial hole -- but the fact that she appreciates good baked goods and knows what constitutes a high quality product.

"I do my best to make our cakes something moist so that you go 'mmm, mmm' when you eat them," she said. "We try to make our chocolate cakes more chocolatey and our strawberry products more strawberry-y. We put our heart into everything we do."

Of special note and nice for the holidays, she said are rum bites, miniature rum cakes that are "something special for the table."

Logan said her apple cakes -- what she's most famous for -- are made with fresh juicy apples, organic sugars and spices and all natural ingredients. "They are baked with an appreciation for all for all of those people who bought cakes from us and helped us get where we are today."

Mortgage Apple Cakes is at 740 Chestnut Avenue, Teaneck, 201-371-3121, www.maccakes.com/.
