David John Howard, 76, Poughkeepsie Resident

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – David John Howard, a lifelong resident of the Poughkeepsie area, died Thursday, Feb. 18, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 76.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1939, in Tivoli, to William L. Howard Sr. and Helen R. Wisnieski Howard. 

He was a police officer with the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1986. He was a detective in his last 10 years with the department. 

After retiring from the Town of Poughkeepsie, he worked for the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department. He owned Howard's Farm & Home Center in Clinton Corners for 14 years.

He was a member of the Clinton Alliance Church, and a lifetime member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. He was also a member of the Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge No. 275. An avid sportsman, he was a member of the National Rifle Association and many sportsmen's clubs. He had bowled in the Bridge City Bowling League since the 1960s and enjoyed spending time with friends.

He is survived by his three children, Adrienne Dee Zeigler of Fishkill, David L. Howard of Newport News, Va., and Stephanie A. Spann and her husband, Michael, of Clinton Corners; three stepchildren, Christine Ford of Wassaic, Jessica White and her husband, David, of LaGrange, and Anthony Wiands of Clinton Corners; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Howard of Ausable Forks, N.Y.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his identical twin brother, William L. Howard Jr.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9, Hyde Park. 

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Clinton Alliance Church, 1192 Centre Road, Rhinebeck. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in the spring in the Schultzville Cemetery, behind the church.
