“The victims’ symptoms did not appear serious or life-threatening at the time of transport” for evaluation and treatment to Hackensack UMC at Pascack Valley in Westwood and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Old Tappan Police Chief Thomas Shine said.

PSE&G and the Old Tappan Fire Department received CO meter readings of 650 parts per million after the 12:25 p.m. call to 40 Russell Avenue, the chief said.

Claude Painting & Power Washing Company of Fort Lee was operating a gas-powered generator while power-washing the basement when the workers were overcome by the colorless, odorless, tasteless gas, Shine said.

EMS from Old Tappan, River Vale and Westwood tended to the victims, who “complained of headaches, nausea, vomiting and itchy eyes,” the chief said.

No people or pets were in the building at the time, he said.

Firefighters evacuated and ventilated the building.
