A 10-year veteran just ending his shift was heading east on Westwood Avenue, approaching the Five Corners area on Kinderkamack Road, when the southbound jogger suddenly ran across the street against the light around 5:45 this morning, Police Chief Frank Regino said.

She was struck by the front of the vehicle and thrown to the ground, he said.

The cruiser’s dashboard camera was on and recorded “the entire incident” from the officer’s view, “the green light, everything,” the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The 28-year-old borough woman, a Park Ridge native and frequent runner, was being prepared for surgery today at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The officer was shaken up, as well, Regino said. He was taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

The chief said he planned to speak to him this morning, as well as to the jogger.

As for when the 40-year-old officer could return to duty, Regino said, “It’s up to him…. ”

The police vet, who has worked closely with the department’s youth police academy, “was extremely distraught over the possibility of her being seriously injured,” the chief said. “But it looks like her injuries aren’t life-threatening.”

Police closed a block-long stretch of Westwood Avenue, diverting traffic to Fairview Avenue, while investigating the incident.
