The student told police he was walking home for lunch on Walthery Avenue near the corner of Linwood Avenue around 11:45 a.m. when he “noticed a man walking behind him who appeared to be following him,” Detective Capt. Jacqueline Luthcke said.

The robber “grabbed his backpack, which caused the juvenile to fall to the ground,” Luthcke said. He then “pulled out a knife and started slashing at the juvenile.”

The teen broke free, ran home, then contacted school authorities, who alerted police, the captain said this afternoon.

He was taken to the Valley Hospital, where he was treated for several cuts, she said.

Meanwhile, village police flooded the area with uniformed and unmarked patrol units — a presence that Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward said would continue for the near future.

The teen described his assailant as white, in his 20s, with slightly scruffy facial hair and wearing a black long sleeve shirt and black sweat pants.

Anyone with information about the incident, or that could be helpful to the investigation, is asked to call Ridgewood Police: (201) 251-4536
