White Plains Celebrates Halloween

This year, 157 million Americans are going to celebrate Halloween on Saturday, down on last year's 162 million, according to the National Retail Federation. 

The word "Halloween" means "hallowed evening" or "holy evening."

The spending behind Halloween is going to be truly spooktacular, as ever, with total spending across the United States expected to hit $6.9 billion. Of that, $1.2 billion will be spent on adult costumes while $950 million will be spent on costumes for kids. 

Americans are also keen to get their pets involved in the fun and 20 million people will dress their pets in costumes, spending a whopping $350 million in the process.

The top five costumes for children are: 1) Princess, 2) "Batman" Character, 3) Other Superheroes, 4) Animals and 5) A "Frozen" Character.

The top five for adults are: 1) Witch, 2) Animals, 3)"Batman" Character, 4) Zombie and 5) "Star Wars" Character.
