County Announces Nature Center, Park Events In White Plains

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Westchester County Nature Centers and Muscoot Farm Events will host several activities on the weekend of Jan. 10-11.

Muscoot Farm on Route 100 in Somers will host Basic Wood Carving from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 11 as part of several outdoors-themed activities that weekend.

Saturday, Jan. 10

At the Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, there will be a Naturalist's Choice Hike. Weather and seasonal conditions will determine where this hike will lead. Contact (914) 864-7322 for more information.

Surviving the Winter, held at the Lenoir Preserve on Dudley Street in Yonkers, will allow participants to learn how local flora and fauna have adapted to survive Westchester's winter. The event begins at 11 a.m. Contact  (914) 968-5851 for more information.

The Cranberry Lake Preserve on Old Orchard Street in North White Plains will hold a Winter Wonderland Hike at 11 p.m. Hikers will enjoy the fresh, crisp air. Contact 914) 428-1005 for more information.

Make your own bird feeder to take home and then go for a hike at the Marshlands Conservancy on Route 1 in Rye. The Winter Bird Feeder Make 'n' Take will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, contact (914) 835-4466.

 

Sunday, Jan. 11

Muscoot Farm on Route 100 in Somers will host Basic Wood Carving from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can learn the basics of woodcarving. This event is for individuals ages 14 and up. The cost is $40 and pre-registration is required. Contact (914) 864-7282 for more information.

Growing Under Lights will teach you how to grow indoor plants using artificial lights. This event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial on Route 35 in Katonah. The event is free but preregistration is required.Contact (914) 864-7268 to register or for more information.

Bring your binoculars for the Evening Owl Prowl, where attendees can seek out the first breeding bird of the year--the Great Horned Owl. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Marshlands Conservancy on Route 1 in Rye.
