Each year, wheelchair athletes from across the tri-state area and beyond come to Burke to compete in a variety of athletic competitions. This sporting event allows disabled persons to show their ability in a variety of track, field and table tennis events.

The Wheelchair Games is produced entirely by volunteers, which includes Burke employees as well as people from the community. Volunteers help with any number of activities, from registration to food distribution to assisting the athletes.

People from civic groups, schools, religious organizations and other associations are welcome — as well as individuals or families looking to give of their time for a worthwhile cause. All event volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and lunch.

“This is a banner year for the Wheelchair Games because it will mark the 35th year that Burke has hosted the event," said Richard Sgaglio, director of marketing and external relations at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.

"And although it is a competition, the Games are also about camaraderie and inclusion for all participants, regardless of ability level. The Burke Wheelchair Games rely on community volunteers to make the event a success. Please consider being part of the Games on September 20th.”

Track events include 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 400, 800 and 1,500 meter races, and the slalom, which is an obstacle course. Field events include club, softball, javelin, shot put, and discus.

To volunteer, a registration form has to be completed and returned by Friday, Sept. 5. Visit burke.org/community/special-events-programs/wheelchair-games or contact Michael Ragnetti at 914-597-2152. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age to participate.
