Zipcars Introduced To White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — If you're thinking about buying a car, the city of White Plains has teamed with Zipcar Inc. to offer an alternative that may save you money in the long run, Mayor Thomas Roach announced Tuesday.

The Zipcar program rents cars to individuals or businesses on an hourly and daily rate, which includes gas, reserved parking spots in three locations in downtown White Plains, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles per day. Zipcar "members" use a card to buy gas, which is billed to Zipcar Inc. Members are asked to leave at least a quarter tank of gas when they return a rented car.

In White Plains, eight vehicles will be kept in three locations: the White Plains Garage Center, 237 Martine Ave.; Hamilton-Main Garage, 365 Hamilton Ave.; and Bronx Street Lot, 3 Hamilton Ave., adjacent to the White Plains train station.

"Zipcar is a convenient and environmentally responsible way to travel and offers residents who live in downtown White Plains an affordable alternative to owning a personal vehicle,” Roach said on the second level of the parking garage next to the City Center, where there are now four Zipcar spaces.

Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for as long as several days.

Each car shared takes 15 privately owned cars off the roads, and the number of miles traveled is reduced nearly 40 percent, according to a city statement.
