The Westchester Green Business Challenge is a private-public partnership between the county and The Business Council of Westchester to help companies take steps to change how they function, while saving money. More than 250 businesses have joined the challenge, and more than 125 were honored at the program.
Among them were three White Plains firms honored for outstanding achievement in the following categories:
- Energy: Reckson
- Transportation: Verizon
- Water Resources: Crowne Plaza Hotel White Plains
An artisan ice cream shop in Croton-on-Hudson, the Blue Pig, was awarded “The Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award”. It's sustainable business practices include using local ingredients and a sustainable supply chain and training its employees on green practices. It also has a rooftop garden.
“It has been enormously satisfying to see this program take flight in Westchester County and become a model for other green business programs around the country,” Marsha Gordon, president of the Business Council of Westchester, said in a statement. “Employers from all industries have realized that sustainability is an essential ingredient to their long-term success and ability to retain the most talented workforce. I would encourage all businesses in Westchester to sign up for this program if they haven’t already done so.”
The event was held at the Mapleton at Good Counsel Conference & Catering Center in White Plains.
