Preliminary jobless rates for June found fewer people were unemployed last month in Westchester County, the Hudson Valley and entire state compared to a year ago, the New York State Labor Department said on Tuesday.

Last month's unemployment rates for Westchester (3.8 percent) Putnam (3.7 percent) and Rockland (3.9 percent) were among the lowest of any counties in New York state and jobless numbers in all three counties had fallen since June 2015.

As a region, the three counties of Orange-Rockland-Westcheste enjoyed an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent -- down from 4.7 percent in June 2015.

A chart showing last month's unemployment rates for all of New York state's 62 counties can be found by clicking here.

Unemploment in the Dutchess-Putnam region was reported at 3.9 percent last month compared to 4.6 percent in June 2015.

Improvement in employment was slower in New York City, according to Tuesday's Labor Department report. And unemployment among residents of New York City remained high at 5.1 percent in June -- yet had improved from the 5.5 percent jobless rate reported in June 2015.

Jobless rates fell to 3.8 percent in the Long Island counties of Nassau and Suffolk, down from 4.5 percent a year ago.

Because last month's data has not been seasonally adjusted to include summer hires, the job counts for this year may be even higher, officials said.

Revised estimates for prior months are available aby clicking here .

From June 2015 to June 2016, the state’s private sector job count increased by 120,700. In June 2016, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 7,918,400 -- which labor officials called "an all-time high." Based on a survey of 18,000 employers by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, New York's statewide unemployment rate remained unchanged last month from May's 4.7 percent — the lowest level in more than eight years.

The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts about 3,100 households in New York state each month.
