Public Meeting Scheduled To Determine Fate Of White Plains Mall

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The public is encouraged to take part in a public meeting on Monday, Aug. 7 that could determine the fate of the mostly vacant White Plains Mall, according to lohud.com.

The hearing will focus on a proposed land-use change that would transform the 70s era mall into a mixed-use development of retail and residential under the new Transit Development District zoning, lohud added. It will be held at White Plains City Hall.

To make the changes, the developer, W.P. Mall Reality, is requesting a zoning change to move forward, said lohud.

If approved, the development could mean a huge step forward in reinventing the entire train station area, they added.

During a meeting earlier in July, the developer's environmental impact statement was approved, if the zoning changes are accepted, the mall's owner would still need to submit a final site plan for approval, lohud reported.

The project comes after the city used a $1 million state grant to study the area and create the new Transit District zoning to help make the area more of a destination which was both family-friendly and businesses, said lohud.

Currently, the mall is home to a Department of Motor Vehicles office, a hardware store, a restaurant, and several other businesses.

If approved, the project would get underway in about two to three years.
