Oxfam Targets Purchase-Based PepsiCo With Day Of Action In White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – As a group that says it works to cure global poverty, hunger and injustice, Oxfam America is targeting Purchase-based PepsiCo and several other food companies for this year’s World Food Day on Wednesday, Oct. 16 to urge them to prevent land grabs that cause hunger, a press release from the organization said.

Oxfam will host a day of action at several locations – including at PepsiCo’s temporary headquarters, at 1111 Westchester Avenue in White Plains, on Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. – and in other communities around the country to urge them to address land grabs in their sugar supply chains, the release said.

“As demand for sugar increase, so does the rush for land to grow it,” an announcement from Oxfam said. “Oxfam has found that companies that supply sugar to Coke, Pepsi, Associated British Foods and other food and beverage giants are kicking poor farmers off their land and robbing them of their rights – leaving many homeless and hungry.”

Oxfam claims that farmers of small farms have been violently kicked off their land and stripped of their livelihoods in Cambodia and Brazil to make way for sugar plantations that supply the biggest food and beverage companies in the world, according to the organization’s announcement.
