New Pharmacy In White Plains Offers Personal Touch

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Isaac Murdakh’s lifelong dream was to own an independent pharmacy. Last month, it became a reality in White Plains for him and his wife, Julie.

The Murdakhs opened Pulse Pharmacy at 288 Mamaroneck Ave, at street level of Jefferson Place. Isaac and Julie, both of whom are pharmacists, believe their store will be a throwback to a time when people received personal customer service, reliable advice and expertise from a knowledgeable and courteous staff.

“Everyone has a right to choose their pharmacy,’’ Isaac Murdakh said. “We want to be that independent alternative. Ask yourselves how many times you went to a ‘big chain’ pharmacy and were forced to stand in endless lines, wait days for refills, rarely see the same pharmacist twice and didn’t even realize that you had a choice. At Pulse Pharmacy, we believe there is a better way.”

Some of Pulse Pharmacy’s conveniences include free delivery, a vitamin club for children, medication compounding, free blood pressure screening and a flavoring system that helps children take their medication.

The Murdakhs had worked in several pharmacies, but wanted to open their own business. They considered Queens, but fell in love with White Plains. A nearby national chain did not dissuade them.

“Since we got our licenses, this is something we’ve always wanted to do,’’ Julie Murdakh said. “Isaac loves to have that one-on-one time with customers. We go beyond patient counseling, and you just don’t get that in a chain.”

Free delivery is one feature, in particular, that the Murdakhs believe will resonate with customers. “A physician can call in the prescription or send it in electronically, and we’ll deliver it right to their door,’’ Isaac Murdakh said. "It couldn’t be any easier.”

The vitamin club for children ages 2-12 is also unique. “It was something we could do for the community,’’ his wife said. “Vitamins are usually not covered by most  insurances or HMOs. All the parents have to do is fill out the enrollment form and their children can get a free monthly supply of chewable vitamins.”

An example of the Murdakhs’ expertise came earlier this month when a customer with a persistent cough asked for advice.

“I knew a medication that might work and called the doctor, and he said let’s give it a shot,’’ Isaac Murdakh said. “I was able to give her a prescription. This is what I went to school for, and it’s paying off. A pharmacy is not just a retail store. It’s a place where you get health care. I feel like that attention has been lost.”

The couple is aware of the struggles independent pharmacies encounter when competing against corporate-back giants, but they believe their service, expertise and professional care will win over the community. The Murdakhs even adopted a tag line, “We Care For Your Every Beat,” to demonstrate their commitment to their clientele. Parking is also available.

“When they try us, at the end of the day customers realize that ‘Wow, this is the kind of service we can be getting,’’’ Julie Murdakh said. “Thirty and 40 years ago, all you saw were independent pharmacies. We are thrilled to be able to bring that type of personal attention back to each and every person.  We are more than just a pharmacy. Our front store is fully stocked at prices that can’t be beat. Come on in and see for yourself.  We look forward to serving you.”
