Don Coqui To Open In White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A second Don Coqui restaurant will open soon in Westchester, this one in White Plains,  which general manager, Jimmy Rodriguez called the "hub of Westchester."

Renowned interior designer Ilan Waisbrod is remodeling two vacant properties in White Plains for the eatery.

The new location may open as early as the beginning of March. It replaces two businesses that recently closed: Cabo, a nightclub at 107 Mamaroneck Ave.; and Seasons, a sushi restaurant at 105 Mamaroneck Ave. The space will allow Don Coqui to seat between 250 and 300 people, Rodriguez said.

“It’s exciting because White Plains is like the hub for all of Westchester,” Rodriguez said. “All the major corporations are here. People travel from north and south.”

Rodriguez’s two daughters, Jaleene and Jewelle, are co-owners of Don Coqui, which first opened in New Rochelle in 2009. They bought the two White Plains properties in September 2012. Their father said he expects the White Plains location will serve a couple thousand diners per week, and perhaps more with the foot traffic on Mamaroneck Avenue.

Waisbrod, of Studio Gaia architects and interior designers in New York City, is completing the remodel, which Rodgriguez said will offer an elegant and inviting decor.

Waisbrod is known for a minimalist approach, earth tones and clean lines, and designing the furniture in his restaurants, according to Food & Wine Magazine.
